The Louisiana Department of Health has received confirmation of one additional case of Zika virus from another state laboratory. All of the Zika positive test results are due to a mosquito bite while traveling overseas and none involve a pregnancy. And because the virus is also sexually transmitted the Center for Disease Control recommends that individuals who have traveled to infected areas use contraception. In a country of just 6 million people, the seemingly sudden rise of this health crisis seized those expecting or attempting to get pregnant with fears of devastating fetal defects like microcephaly, hearing loss and impaired growth. While sexual transmission of Zika virus is possible, it is primarily transmitted to people by Aedes species mosquitoes.
This is the third case of Zika virus in a person in Nebraska. "Course, we're warning all folks that travel to heed the cautions that we've been providing, as far as using bug repellent, and if you're pregnant certainly reconsider traveling to those countries that have Zika transmission". Common symptoms include a fever, rash, joint pain and red eyes. For women who are trying to become pregnant, they should follow similar precautions, or delay conception. Epidemiologists have calculated that the chance of contracting Zika virus while traveling to Brazil this summer (winter in Brazil) is low, though not impossible. The CDC encourages mothers who have Zika virus infection and those living in areas with active infection continue to breast feed their infants, as the benefits of breast feeding outweigh the potential risk of transmission of Zika virus through breastfeeding.
U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Florida, took to the Senate floor Tuesday to once again push for passage of a bipartisan Zika-funding bill that would provide $1.1 billion to fight the spread of the virus.
