Baillie, Fredette, and Hamilton Families release statement over murders

Awaiting the eventual trial in the deaths of little Taliyah Marsman and her mother, Sara, Scott says, "As long as there is no death penalty, there is no justice".

Jenn Onavka, a friend of Baillie's who has set up an online fundraising page for her relatives, said she hadn't heard of Downey before and neither had Taliyah's godmother.

At this point in time, we respectfully request that all media outlets respect the families' privacy and direct all questions through the Calgary Police Service Public Affairs Media Relations Unit.

"I have no idea who this man is", he said. Although our hopes and prayers may not have been answered, we certainly in no way, shape, or form blame the CPS.

Monday 11:30 a.m. _ A girl matching Taliyah's description is seen near the family's home with a stocky, black male.

Edward Delten Downey was later charged with the first-degree murders of Taliyah and her mother, 34-year-old Sara Baillie. He remains in custody, pending his next hearing. They say he was known to the victims and has been prohibited from contacting the girl's father, Colin Marsman.

Her daughter, Taliyah, was missing, prompting police to issue an AMBER Alert on Tuesday-which has since been called off.

"The family is devastated, clearly", he added.

At a funding announcement, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said she was a handsome child with a full and promising life ahead of her.

And Premier Rachel Notley also used the occasion to express her sympathies.

"They did not deserve this", Onavka said in a Facebook message.

"In the face of such senseless and tragic loss we reach out with love and with a desire to help each other", Notley said.

"There was nothing we could do before we even got involved".

"Over the last 72 hours, we've had approximately 100 officers at time working around the clock with the goal of finding young Taliyah", said CPS Chief Constable Roger Chaffin. She's bright, she's lovely, she's everything. The case began Monday evening when investigators were called to Ms. Baillie's basement suite when she did not show up for work. "She's very smart and I love her", said Marsman.

Downey's next court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday.
