Next month in Rio, for the first time in history, Team USA will attempt to defend its team gold medal.
By punching their tickets to Rio, Raisman and Douglas are the first USA women's gymnasts to make two Olympics since Dominique Dawes and Amy Chow did so in 1996 and 2000.
Speaking of the Olympics, Caitlyn Jenner recently celebrated the 40-year anniversary of her gold medal win, covered in gold on the cover of Sports Illustrated. A revelation in London four years ago, the 20-year-old has struggled with her form in recent weeks and fell off balance beam for a second straight night while finishing seventh behind Biles.
But national team coordinator Martha Karolyi had indicated during the competition that she was prepared to dismiss the problems as flukes, expressing confidence that under the supervision of national staff Douglas would be back on track in time for the Games.
The Olympic trials for the USA gymnastics team concluded yesterday and we finally know which five team members will be heading to Rio de Janeiro for the 2016 Games. But Karolyi was still willing to bet on the reigning Olympic champion, needing another big score on uneven bars and knowing Douglas will spend most of the time before the Rio Games begin under her watchful eye.
Three alternate athletes were also named: Ragan Smith, Ashton Locklear and MyKayla Skinner.
That had more to do with the quality of gymnasts who didn't make the team rather than the lack of clarity about the decision.
"She has helped me push myself to be even better on bars after I got second to her at P&G Championships", Kocian said.
Even at age 22, Raisman is commonly referred to as "Grandma" by her fans and fellow gymnasts.
Biles could breathe easy as she awaited the announcement and so could her family members and coaches. Which means she will spend the Olympics watching the performances of the two US teammates who finished behind her Sunday - Gabby Douglas and Madison Kocian. And yes, Simone Biles made the list. In 2015, she won all-around silver at the world championships. Just prior to the vault, one of the announcers recalled seeing it in practice and referred to it as "the most flawless piece of gymnastics" he had ever seen. She finished second, 2.100 points behind. "It doesn't really sink in that I've already been here before".
"It has been so much fun and hasn't really sunk in yet but it will", said Biles. Some former athletes are calling her the best female gymnast of all-time, including former all-around Olympic gold medalist Mary Lou Retton.
"There is no doubt in my mind this team will come home from Rio with the Gold!" At 16, she's also the youngest girl on the team. None of this though takes away from how talented of a gymnast Skinner is nor what she was able to accomplish at the U.S. Olympic Trials.
Madison Kocian was chosen for the team for her medal-worthy uneven bars routine.
