Carson Fulmer getting call-up to White Sox

The White Sox have activated first baseman/designated hitter Justin Morneau from the disabled list and optioned outfielder Jason Coats to Triple-A in a corresponding move.

Morneau struggled in his eight rehab games, going 4 for 23 with two RBIs and four strikeouts.

The right-handed pitcher will be promoted Friday and be with the Chicago White Sox when the Major League season resumes following the All-Star break.

"I went down and accomplished what I needed to accomplish", Morneau said.

The 22-year-old Fulmer is expected to join Chicago's bullpen, though he certainly projects as a starter down the line.

The White Sox will call up 2015 first-round draft pick Carson Fulmer on Friday for the opener of a three-game series against the Angels, according to multiple reports.

"I did it a little bit in college", he said. He has a 4-9 record and 4.76 ERA in 17 starts while striking out 90 batters in 87 innings.

"I'm just getting ahead", Fulmer told MiLB.com last weekend. Playing his home games in Coors Field added those numbers, to be sure, but Morneau was as hard to strike out as ever with the Rox - his 15.2 percent career strikeout rate is considerably lower than most power hitters - and was quite productive even on the road in 2014, suggesting that there's still life left in his bat.

But Fulmer's been sharp of late, compiling a 0.95 ERA in his last three starts, including a scoreless streak of 15 innings. "Obviously we're banged up in the back end of the bullpen".
