Earlier in the day, Kevin Durant announced via a first-person narrative on the Players Tribune that he had chosen to sign with the Warriors - on a reported two-year, $54.3 million deal with a player option in the second year.
Barnes had his best production as a pro this past season, averaging 11.7 points and 4.9 rebounds in 66 games.
Golden State Warriors fans woke up this morning to some fantastic news.
The Mavericks also have an agreement on a four-year, $37 million deal with restricted free agent Dwight Powell, who is all Dallas has left to show for the ill-fated Rajon Rondo trade with Boston from two seasons ago. The Mavericks get a center while the Warriors clear out salary cap room for Durant.
Dallas Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle will be in Ames tomorrow to watch Barnes work and sign him to his new contract. Andrew Bogut, one of the premier "I hate him unless he's on my team and then I love him" players in all the Association will be coming in a trade very similar to the acquisition of Zaza Pachulia at the end of free agency past year.
According to multiple reports, Golden State found a trade partner in Dallas, and sent Bogut to the Mavericks.
Barnes is headed to Dallas on a max deal. He shot 47 percent from the field and 38 percent from behind the three-point line. In essence, Bogut is just swapping uniforms with Zaza Pachulia who agreed to play for Golden State Warriors. This off-season players like Bradley Beal, Chandler Parsons, Kent Bazemore and Evan Turner have all recieved lucrative contracts, and I believe the only one in that group that may be better than Barnes is Chandler Parsons.
"It's a great honor to play next to two shooters with the capabilities of Steph and Klay", Bogut said in a promotional question-and-answer session on Twitter this month. Barnes made $3.4 million last season, the highest salary of his 13-year career. The impending retirement of superstar Dirk Nowitzki also means that Mark Cuban's team will need someone young and athletic who can bring the team to another championship run. Next: Barnes' buddy Andrew Bogut follows.
And then on Monday--Barnes finds out he is leaving Golden State for Dallas- and a whopping new 4 year $94-million dollar contract.
