Hutchinson, Griffin pleased with Pence as Trump veep pick

Pence's biggest controversy as IN governor came previous year, when he signed the state's Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which critics contended could have let businesses IN the state refuse to serve gays.

Some conservatives who had fought against Trump's ascendancy in the Republican nominating race welcomed his announcement that he had picked Pence, a well-known social and evangelical conservative. "So he said, "I want to postpone it", Manafort said.

Trump was up against a clock in unveiling his pick.

Mike Pence is off the ballot for governor.

Yet Pence is largely unknown to many Americans. And his solidly conventional political background runs counter to Trump's anti-establishment mantra. His decision comes as the Republican party gears up for its convention in Cleveland.

Pence also received the support of U.S. Sen.

And on the Democratic side of the ticket, Bernie Sanders steps aside and endorses Hillary Clinton as the presidential nominee.

He pointed to Trump's comments that he doesn't oppose all trade deals - just poorly negotiated ones - and said he sees that as a reason for optimism.

There was no mention of how Pence's position may have shifted since December, when he tweeted that Trump's proposed temporary Muslim ban was "offensive and unconstitutional". Susan Brooks and Todd Rokita withdrew from their re-election bids Friday shortly after Pence ended his re-election bid following Donald Trump's announcement of Pence as his running mate.

"I think it's an oversight".

Prior to Pence's election as governor of IN, he served IN the U.S. House of Representatives from 2001 to 2013.

"I am pleased to announce that I have chosen Governor Mike Pence as my Vice Presidential running mate", wrote Trump on his Twitter account.

Democrats on Friday were critical of the choice. Leading candidates include Virginia Senator Tim Kaine and Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren.

Several sources and news organizations including NPR reported Pence was Trump's pick throughout the day on Thursday.

Trump has declared himself the most gay-friendly candidate in the election.

Griffin called Pence smart, thoughtful, serious and steady. Pence accepted and boarded a private plane, along with his wife.

Trump also announced the formal introductory press conference would be Saturday at 11 a.m.

Pence initially endorsed Ted Cruz back in May but backed Trump after the candidate won his home state of Indiana.

Trump, by contrast, has sounded different notes on Israel and a range of other issues core to the group's mission.
