Jose Reyes To Bat Lead-Off, Play Third Base

The outfielder will miss the All-Star Game due to a disappointing first half, but could potentially still be in the Home Run Derby.

The Mets host the division leading Nationals for the start of a four-game series on Thursday night.

After throwing New York into high-stakes round of "the Waiting Game" from on 0-for-4 debut, Jose Reyes finally recorded his first hit in his New York Mets return.

"[Stanton's] swinging the bat good for us and now we have to get guys on in front of him and just continue on with the rest of our lineup", Marlins manager Don Mattingly said.

Though he's not on the All-Star team, a grinning Stanton said he would participate in the Home Run Derby next Monday in San Diego if asked.

Stanton has six home runs in his last 11 contests at Citi Field.

Stanton homered twice and drove in all five runs in Tuesday's 5-2 victory for Miami, which completes a three-game set at the New York Mets on Wednesday afternoon. The second blast was the 200th of Stanton's career and gave him homers in four consecutive at-bats.

The Mets won this series with the Marlins two games to one and are now 6-1 over the first seven games on this home stand.

"I know there's going to be some people that are going to hate me", Reyes said.

It was his 17th career multi-homer game and the first of the season.

Cespedes is hitting. 429 with three homers and six RBIs during his nine-game hitting streak. His primary competition for that job, the newest old Met, Jose Reyes, wound up playing shortstop today, as Asdrubal Cabrera was a late scratch. He pointed toward the Mets' dugout and patted his helmet several times.

Stanton said he wasn't thinking about the homers when he was at the plate. Cespedes tossed his bat aside after connecting on a drive that clanked off the facing of the second deck in left field.

Chen allowed one run on three hits and one walk while striking out five over seven innings.

It was the sixth homer of the year for Chirinos, the Rangers' No. 9 hitter, as Texas reclaimed the major-league lead in wins after the Chicago Cubs' 9-5 loss to Cincinnati.

DeGrom battled to get through seven innings, limiting the damage to two home runs.

Mets: To make roster room for Reyes, the Mets optioned INF Matt Reynolds to Triple-A Las Vegas and transferred 3B David Wright (neck surgery) to the 60-day disabled list.

Stanton started the fireworks in the top of the seventh, when he took NY starter Steven Matz (7-4) deep with Marcel Ozuna on first to give the Fish a 2-1 lead.

"His first [at-bat], first-pitch hacking, ambushed me, I was up a little bit", Nicolino said.

Just called up from the minors, Reyes went 0 for 4 with a strikeout in a 5-2 loss that ended New York's five-game winning streak.
