Liverpool to Add Defender Ragnar Klavan to Ease Injury Woes

Some Liverpool fans and players might remember him after Jurgen Klopp's men faced the Germans in a Europa League last season, in which the Premier League side won 1-0 on aggregate.

According to ESPN FC, Liverpool are very close to signing Ragnar Klavan, a centre back from FC Augsburg.

At 6ft 1in, Klavan is a powerful, left-footed player, strong in the air and ranked fourth in terms of clearances per game (5.8) of Bundesliga centre-backs to have made over 20 appearances last season.

Now, that appears to be sorted with the 30-year old providing the German manager with sufficient cover for the mean time with the future of both Andre Wisdom, who failed to impress during a loan spell with Norwich City over the previous campaign, and Lucas, who has been deployed as a makeshift defender on more than one occasion, uncertain.

Klopp, meanwhile, expects Joel Matip to recover from a recurring foot problem sustained during Sunday's friendly win over Wigan Athletic.

Liverpool are desperate for help at the back after the departure of Kolo Toure and injuries to Joe Gomez and Mamadou Sakho, with Klavan seen as an ideal replacement.

"I hope it's only a minor problem", Klopp said.

"The lads who were with us a year ago and are here now know that it is always intensive with Jurgen's training sessions", he said.

Dejan Lovren has praised the performances of his new team-mates and believes an intensive pre-season schedule is helping them to hit the ground running. He's used to it. I think Monday he'll rest, then he can go again.
