#NativeVote2016: Republican National Convention Opens in Cleveland

The arrests were made Tuesday morning on the second day of the Republican National Convention.

Despite speculation that the first day of the RNC could hold the same violent protests that have followed the Trump campaign across the nation, the protestors kept things peaceful.

Barring a last-minute jolt to the proceedings, Donald Trump is hours away from attaining the 2016 presidential nomination despite efforts to stop him that spilled messily into the opening of the Republican National Convention.

As usual in this unpredictable convention, the list of speakers includes some unusual names, including Andy Wist, founder and CEO of a waterproofing company in the Bronx, as well as Dana White, president of the popular Ultimate Fighting Championship, which promotes mixed martial arts and features top-ranked fighters in the sport.

Hossein Khorram, a Muslim American delegate from Washington state, thought Mrs Trump's speech "lovely" in that it showed a more human side to the businessman.

The traditional roll call of states is set to unfold Tuesday night, delivering the delegates to make Trump the standard-bearer after a rollicking primary season that saw him vanquish 16 rivals.

When the Trump campaign and Republican National Committee steamrolled their plan, the dissenters unleashed a torrent of boos that undermined the candidate's attempt to demonstrate party unity.

Indeed, with Trump laying claim to a solid majority of delegates, the anti-Trump movement appears all but defeated. "I know him personally, and this is a very good and decent man, and he will be a great president", Giuliani said. Watch for the most die-hard anti-Trump delegates to cause a ruckus, and expect plenty of corny references to a state's famous foods or prized natural wonders.

As his wife, Melania, put it from the stage, "It would not be a Trump contest without excitement and drama".

The Trump campaign on Tuesday dismissed criticism that Melania Trump directly lifted two passages almost word-for-word from the speech that first lady Michelle Obama delivered in 2008 at the Democratic National Convention, calling the complaints "just absurd".

The passages in question came near the beginning of Mrs. Trump's roughly 10-minute speech.

Comparisons were quickly drawn on social media as the controversy went viral.

The Trump campaign has yet to respond to Fox News' request for comment on Melania Trump's speech. The statement didn't mention Mrs. Obama.

Trump's campaign team later responded to the criticism by issuing a statement saying: "In writing her attractive speech, Melania's team of writers took notes on her life's inspirations, and in some instances included fragments that reflected her own thinking".

Mrs Trump's speech was short on personal anecdotes about her husband and long on generalisations and platitudes about her husband's character traits as a partner and father.

Luntz told jokes - several about presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton - then said, "Yes, I stole that".

Melania Trump emotionally assured GOP convention delegates in Cleveland, Ohio, and voters across the country that the brash candidate has the character and determination to unite a divided nation.

Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, whose administration has been credited with sharply reducing crime in the city during the 1990s and who oversaw the city's response to the September 11, 2001, attacks that destroyed the World Trade Center and killed nearly 3,000 people, gave a highly charged speech slamming Clinton and making the case for Trump. Christie lobbied hard to be Trump's vice presidential pick but was passed over, just as his "Bridgegate" political retribution scandal continues to evolve.
