Until last season and Joc Pederson's run to the finals, the Home Run Derby has been disappointment for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Fernandez was among several All-Star pitchers expressing interest in participating in the Home Run Derby.
Frazier, last year's champion, beat Rockies outfielder Carlos Gonzalez and Reds outfielder Adam Duvall in the first two rounds to reach the final. If it would have come down to it, you would have seen me yelling.
Stanton said he didn't want to compete for nothing.
"Taking the flight out here just for this", Stanton said afterward, his trophy sitting on the table in front of him.
Looming in the second round was Stanton, the monster power hitter who a round earlier hit 24 to eliminate Robinson Cano.
Both finalists, Stanton and Frazier, aren't on the All-Star game rosters. The athleticism that it takes, as well as the strength to do what he was able to do in the Home Run Derby - not only the Home Run Derby, but throughout an entire season - it's hard to put into words, but it's just extremely impressive. Playing in the same division as him for a long time, I know what he's capable of doing, and that was really cool. "I had a blast".
SAN DIEGO-Giancarlo Stanton didn't just win the Home Run Derby on Monday night-he pounded it into submission.
"When I get a few in a row I would kind of bump it up 5 to 10 percent", Stanton said.
"I'm more rapid fire in the way I work and with regular [batting practice]".
"I knew I could do it endurance wise", he explained. Stanton reminded everyone last night why fans live to watch the Home Run Derby every year.
The powerhouse Stanton recounted watching the Derby as a kid and seeing the likes of Sammy Sosa, Mark McGwire, and Ken Griffey Jr. make the event a must-watch spectacle.
Shine returned the favor in complimenting Stanton. He's one of the strongest players in the big leagues and I'm proud of him. Abreu only had 10 outs per round to work with, where Stanton had as many swings as he could fit into a time limit. He's built a resume in his seven years in the game as baseball's most ferocious slugger, the man capable of hitting balls out of ballparks they hardly leave.
"That was insane", Cano said. "I figure it's a waste if I don't bring this bad boy home".
Major League home run leader Mark Trumbo and Padres hometown favorite Wil Myers were among those challenging defending champion Todd Frazier. "It gets to you right away".
The other first-round matchups went as expected. Stanton followed with 17 homers in the second round, a total Trumbo, whose 28 homers lead the majors, couldn't match. He then proceded to hit home runs on his next eight swings to advance.
In his final-round winning total of 20 homers, 11 of them were 440 feet or better.
