Syndergaard, Cespedes replaced on National League's All-Star Game roster

PIRATES 8, CUBS 4: Andrew McCutchen had three hits, including an RBI single during a decisive four-run seventh inning, as host Pittsburgh rallied for a rare victory over Jake Arrieta.

"Instead of going out and trying to force themselves through a situation, we're now - as we all know, the majority of injuries are caused by fatigue and the muscle are getting exhausted, and when that happens they need to be able to come over and say 'Skip, I'm done".

Cespedes and Syndergaard were injured just hours after the Mets announced right-handed pitcher Matt Harvey, who started on Opening Day, will undergo season-ending surgery to fix thoracic outlet syndrome. The Nats would get an additional insurance run with an RBI double from Daniel Murphy in the third inning.

After the pair of pitches, Terry Collins trotted out to the mound, and after a brief discussion Syndergaard was lifted - just a short while after the manager removed Yoenis Cespedes, who left after three innings with a strained right quadriceps. Syndergaard is reportedly dealing with bone spurs in his throwing elbow, though has continued pitching through the injury.

"His arm went dead". "But he said there's no pain".

Noah Syndergaard and Yoenis Cespedes have officially been replaced on the National League's All-Star Game roster. They are expected to be examined Saturday.

"He's pretty sore today, so he wouldn't be available today, I would doubt it", Collins said before the third game of a four-game set against the NL East-leading Nats. He said after the game that a recent stint on the disabled list due to an upper-back injury played into his decision not to argue with the Nationals' recommendation that he sit out the game.

"I feel like I could have finished the inning out, " Syndergaard said.

Angels first baseman C.J. Cron fractured a bone in his left hand when hit by a pitch from Mike Wright in the sixth inning. But the Mets finally got in the hit column, and on the board, when Asdrubal Cabrera led of the bottom of the fifth with a solo homer to right field on a full count. "So it wasn't really like a big process to try and get back into things". I felt like I could still go out there and pitch through that.

Jonathan Papelbon took the ball in the ninth with a two-run lead and retired the Mets in order to end it. Ballgame.

The Mets lost for just the second time in nine games, but it was a costly defeat.

This, of course, is just a continuation of Strasburg's entire season, which is now being discussed in historic terms. He is the only qualified starter in the majors without a loss. "He's hitting like.350", losing pitcher Steven Matz said. "So, he's as advertised". But set-up man Hector Neris gave the Phillies a solid inning, and closer Jenmar Gomez, aided by left fielder Tyler Goeddel's sprawling catch, got the final four outs of the game to earn his 24th save in 26 opportunities. Martinez batted. 283 with one home run and three RBIs.

The Mets went out of their way to downplay Syndergaard's exit Friday, ruling out an elbow issue.
