The EU and China will set up a working group to "monitor" and "verify" China's steel export and import data.

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker have called for opening up their markets to businesses, as they attended the EU-China Business Summit in Beijing. "We want trade between China and Europe to grow on a stable platform", he said.

The EU accuses China of dumping cheap steel on European markets, accusations denied by China.

On Monday, Malmström said the European Union still harbours many concerns about the Chinese market that could obstruct closer business ties, including discrimination against European Union businesses.

Ms Malmstrom also lectured her hosts on their laws governing national security and non-governmental organisations.

Leaders also agreed to have another round of the human rights dialogue between the European Union and China still this year in Brussels.

The following press release was issued by the European Commission on July 13, 2016 09:57.

The outcome of the vote to leave the EU "has created a new situation which the United Kingdom and the European Union will have to address soon", Juncker said in a letter published on his Twitter account. The Peterson Institute for International Economics said Washington, facing mounting voter discontent over global trade deals, is unlikely to support market-economy status for China.

Chinese officials have previously tried to reassure foreign companies they are welcome in its economy.

The piece said that "in recent days" Juncker-who was Luxembourg's prime minister between 1995 and 2013-was "looking presidential at EU summits" and had pleased many European leaders with his "doing more by doing less" stance. We will stick to our worldwide obligations, this is beyond doubt. The 14th round of negotiations start Monday in Brussels.

The EU-China Summit comes just a few weeks after the European Commission and the High Representative adopted a Joint Communication on elements for a new EU strategy on China, and will enable discussions at the highest level on issues related to bilateral EU-China political and economic relations, addressing global challenges, and regional and worldwide issues.
