"Since it is summer travel season, we want to remind San Franciscans who are planning to travel to countries where Zika virus is circulating to protect themselves from mosquito bites". The state tallies pregnant women separately because of Zika's association with serious birth defects and fetal death.
Dr. Megan (MEE'-gan) Davies told the State Emergency Response Commission on Friday that the women have agreed to be on the registry managed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The report of the NY couple confirms recent warnings that infected women, as well as men, might be able to sexually transmit the Zika virus, which has spread to about 50 countries in the past year, largely borne by mosquitoes.
"The timing and sequence of events support female-to-male Zika virus transmission", the infectious disease experts wrote in their collaborative report.
The CDC has confirmed 40 Zika cases in Pennsylvania since the winter, all in people who contracted the virus while visiting an outbreak-affected area overseas, health officials have said. The next day, she began exhibiting symptoms of Zika (fever, fatigue, a rash, back pain) and soon tested positive for Zika. Seven days after sexual intercourse, her male partner, also in his twenties, developed fever, a maculopapular rash, joint pain and conjunctivitis.

But, maternal infection in pregnancy can trigger microcephaly, a condition where babies are born with too-small heads and neurological issues. The virus was transmitted either by the young woman's vaginal fluids or menstrual blood.
