'Get Out' steals the box office weekend crown

"Get Out.' This past Friday the movie officially hit theaters, and today it sits on top of the box office charts".

"Get Out", a critically acclaimed horror film distributed by Comcast Corp.'s Universal Pictures, led the box office in its debut in North America, easily knocking "The Lego Batman Movie" from first place.

With a budget of 4.5 million dollars, 'Get Out' is now a critical and financial success!

The victor for the last two weekends, The LEGO Batman Movie, dropped to second place with $19 million, which was just a 41.8% drop from last weekend, while the other two new releases, Collide and Rock Dog, failed to even crack the top 10. But it was a different story for the other two new entries, "Rock Dog" and "Collide", which failed to crack the top 10. Box Office Mojo reports that Get Out debuted in 2,781 theaters, while Rock Dog opened in 2,077 theaters and Collide opened in 2,045 theaters. Normally known for comedy, my eyebrows raised when I heard that Peele was behind this, thinking it was a joke, like a Scary Movie retread.

Jordan, who most audiences know for his sketch comedy work on the series Key & Peele, wrote and directed the film about a black man who travels upstate to meet his white girlfriend's family.

It's starry voice cast includes Will Arnett as the Caped Crusader, Michael Cera as side-kick Robin, Rosario Dawson as Batgirl, Ralph Fienes as Batman's trusted man servant Alfred and Zach Galifianakis as The Joker.

Get Out, made on a budget of $4.5 million, notches Blumhouse's sixth title to bow at a figure in excess of $30 million, and the eighth No. 1 title in its filmography. The earlier film, which also opened in February, reached $130 million domestic in its second weekend and went on to earn $257.8 million in the USA, plus an additional $211.4 million overseas. Although it was edged out of the number 1 slot at the box office over two weeks ago, it spent its first three consecutive weeks at number 1 and cashed in at $221 million worldwide (and still growing).

We should have a new box office champion next weekend as the highly anticipated Marvel film Logan will be released.
