The Los Angeles Lakers made Magic Johnson their new president of basketball operations on February 21, after firing their general manager and executive vice president! Co-owner Jim Buss has also been relieved of his decision-making duties, and the team now effectively belongs to Magic.
Johnson-the Hall-of-Famer who won five championships of his own as the Laker point guard during the 1980's-recently returned to the organization in an adviser role earlier this month. They own the third-worst record in the National Basketball Association, and they're potentially trending toward a last-place finish for the fourth straight season.
Magic Johnson and Jeanie Buss act much more quickly than the characters in "Game of Thrones".
In a press release, Jeanie Buss explained her motivations: "I took these actions today to achieve one goal: Everyone associated with the Lakers will now be pulling in the same direction, the direction established by Earvin and myself".
"I will do everything I can to build a winning culture on and off the court", Johnson said.
Jeanie Buss made the extraordinary moves two days before the NBA's trade deadline. Because Kobe understands winning. He can only manage that by running the Lakers' front office.
The Lakers have been through five coaches' since winning their 16 National Basketball Association title in 2010.
The next question could be, will Kobe Bryant be the next Lakers' legend added to the franchise's front office? Hiring Luke Walton as coach last summer was considered to be a strong step in the right direction, and his work with the team's young core - despite L.A.'s record - is proof of that. The club will begin a search for the next general manager immediately. Johnson has a Hall of Fame credentials as a five-time National Basketball Association champion with the Showtime Lakers. "We are determined to get back to competing to win National Basketball Association championships again".
