Senior Congress leader AK Antony termed Sudheeran's resignation as "unfortunate". When asked whether he will take over the post if the party demands, he said I'm not a party in this. As AICC president Sonia Gandhi is overseas, it is the duty of vice-president Rahul Gandhi to contact the state leadership and make alternative arrangement.
Chennithala further opined that anti-incumbency factor reflected in the results of Assembly elections in five states.
"In politics, being realistic in decision making process is very crucial and gone are the times when the national leadership could thrust their decisions on state units".
Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president VM Sudheeran stunned party circles by announcing his resignation at a routine press conference here on Friday.
Sources close to Sudheeran said that there was no response from the high command and Sudheeran was in no mood to relent.
As the day wore on, it became apparent that he had hinted about his decision to Ramesh Chennithala, Opposition leader in the State Assembly. These include V.D. Sateeshan, K. Muraleedharan, P.T. Thomas, K. Sudhakaran, P.C. Vishnunath and Sashi Tharoor.
Sudheeran has been the KPCC president for more than three years. "Besides, my conscience does not allow me to take a break from the duties of the party president". There should be a strong leadership to save the party.
Whosoever gets the nod will find the going tough as the party has to revive itself from the grassroots, which is not an easy task as the Congress is in power neither in the state nor at the Centre.
