April the giraffe has given birth at a NY zoo as more than a million people around the world watched live.

Keeping the calf "would lead to incestuous mating and undermine the genetics of the program and species", the Animal Adventure Park's website says.

The abrupt 6-foot fall helps break the amniotic sac and encourages the baby giraffe to breathe, according to the zoo.

Anticipation for April's calf reached such a fever pitch, as Animal Adventure Park began a text alert service to tell people of her baby's arrival.

April and Oliver have also been enjoying their new enrichment toys, the park reports.

April was pacing in the barn as the hooves of the new calf appeared.

Rejoice, April the giraffe has finally given birth.

It takes about an hour-and-a-half for a giraffe to be born.

According to the park, this will be April's fourth calf. Eastern on Saturday and posted a video to Facebook shortly thereafter of a park employee excitedly driving to the zoo to welcome the baby.

No immediate details on the calf were announced, but they usually weigh around 150lb (68kg) and are about 6ft (1.8m) tall at birth. April's fans could not contain their excitement as they kicked off their Saturday glued to their screens to get a better look at the pregnant giraffe and her calf. She is now 15 years old. In natural habitats, a giraffe's life span is about 15 years.

Courting begins when the female urinates - the male then sniffs the urine and works out whether she is ready to breed. "We can attribute the late due date to the fact the giraffe births are different from humans". Veterinarians at Animal Adventure Park has been posting daily updates on their Facebook page.
