President Donald Trump told reporters that he does not anticipate the United States having a role in the stabilization of Libya, during a joint press conference with Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni at the White House Thursday.
He repeatedly has said that North Atlantic Treaty Organisation members don't pay their fair share and the US pays too much for military defense in Europe.
Gentiloni, who has been Italy's premier since December, stressed the need for burden-sharing in the refugee crisis, given Italy's proximity to Libya, where large numbers of foreigners undertake a risky voyage across the Mediterranean Sea to reach Europe.

Gentiloni has been strongly critical of protectionist trade policies shielding a country's domestic industries from foreign competition by taxing imports. "And it's also, in my opinion - in my very strong opinion, important for the USA", he said.
They took pains not to offend the man most closely associated with the growing popularity of protectionist trade measures and closed borders: Trump.
