"They were strong, unbelievable women, and I'm so happy that (Reynolds') son did this for us so we can come and pay our respects", she said of Todd Fisher, who arranged the memorial.
"You pay tribute by showing all the great home movies, all the pictures that Carrie and Debbie and I filmed", said Todd.
Hundreds of guests filed into an auditorium on the grounds of the Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills cemetery, where the pair's ashes are buried together.
TCM's Ben Mankiewicz spoke, as did Carrie's friend Griffin Dunne and Carrie's former fiancé and Blues Brothers costar Dan Ackroyd, who lightheartedly related how she sought his advice during their engagement about reconciling with her future husband Paul Simon.
"Carrie's life would never be the same", he said.
Reynolds was well-known for collecting Hollywood memorabilia though much of her life. "I felt a kinship with her personally", said Leytes Styles, a fan from Simi Valley who showed up at 7:30 a.m. for the 1 p.m. service. Fisher said that a public service was in keeping with how both women embraced the people who supported and adored them.
"The entire thing I'm calling a show, not a memorial because my mother loved shows", he said. We've seen her, but we didn't know her.
"She closed her eyes and went to sleep".
R2-D2 attends Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher Memorial at Forest Lawn Cemetery on March 25, 2017 in Los Angeles, California.
Performances from the Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles and Debbie Reynolds Dance School were also done in honor of Debbie's incredible career.
R2-D2 rolled onto stage after Todd Fisher played a video of movie clips and images of the family.
Reynolds was remembered by actress Ruta Lee, who urged fans not to mourn, but rather take delight in the Singin' in the Rain star's life. Blunt's tribute song was accompanied by a montage of photographs of the two. I know it's hard to wait when a song resonates with you immediately, but Blunt is sure to release it in his own time.
"[Carrie] was always my princess", Todd added.
He also introduced Carrie's beloved pets including French bulldog Gary, who travelled the world with his famous mum, and is now being looked after by Carrie's daughter, Scream Queens star Billie Lourd.
"Then there was the time she promised if I went 1st-she'd heckle my funeral".
