Egg hunts are a tradition every year, majority put on by churches.

About a thousand other kids and their relatives also had fun during the free family event that was put on by the City of Odessa and sponsored by Neighbors Emergency Center and others.

The fire department has been putting on the egg hunt, rain or shine, for more than 60 years. "We have the Easter Bunny flying in on a helicopter", Scarberry said.

"It is a lot of fun for the kids and it gets them out of the house and they can play with their friends while having a good time", she said.

Janet Samuel, was ready for fun as she was looking after her 9-year-old granddaughter Ten'aj Williams, who was waiting for the big moment to charge after the eggs.

The hunt was divided into age groups to make it fair and each age group had a special egg with a gold coin inside that could be exchanged for a prized Easter basket. The greens held more than 5,000 eggs, some with candy and some with tickets inside for bicycles and other prizes.

Salem Baptist Pastor David Powell said the event was the second of its kind. In addition to assorted sweets and chocolates, the hunt featured a number of special eggs that were redeemed for larger prizes.
