"We purchased about 6,000 plastic eggs with candy in them", Filoteo said.

Egg hunts are a tradition every year, majority put on by churches.

About a thousand other kids and their relatives also had fun during the free family event that was put on by the City of Odessa and sponsored by Neighbors Emergency Center and others.

The fire department has been putting on the egg hunt, rain or shine, for more than 60 years. "We have the Easter Bunny flying in on a helicopter", Scarberry said.

"It is a lot of fun for the kids and it gets them out of the house and they can play with their friends while having a good time", she said.

The third Easter egg hunt was on the Martinsville Municipal Building lawn.

"I really enjoyed running around and finding the eggs", she said of the event.

"I get together with my son and granddaughter and we just enjoy coming here and the outdoors and its just a fabulous way to spend Easter", said Margo Morris.

A blanket of colorful chocolate eggs covered the grass field of Roosevelt Park on Saturday as children and adults excitedly joined the Easter weekend event.

Her family was taking photos of her, next to a display of the approximately 20 Easter eggs she collected and the yellow Tweety-bird basket she collected them in.

Janet Samuel, was ready for fun as she was looking after her 9-year-old granddaughter Ten'aj Williams, who was waiting for the big moment to charge after the eggs.

The hunt was divided into age groups to make it fair and each age group had a special egg with a gold coin inside that could be exchanged for a prized Easter basket. It's hard to get them away from it. "We try to remind people what the goal of Easter is, that Jesus died to save us from our sins on Friday and rose on Sunday".

The greens held more than 5,000 eggs, some with candy and some with tickets inside for bicycles and other prizes.

Salem Baptist Pastor David Powell said the event was the second of its kind. In addition to assorted sweets and chocolates, the hunt featured a number of special eggs that were redeemed for larger prizes.
