The officers were called to a home around midnight in the 20200 block of Lesure Street near 8 Mile and Schaefer Highway. The officers may have been unintentionally hit by a single bullet shot by teenager inside who was protecting the home.

The other officer was shot in the left arm and is expected to be released soon.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig says a man fired a shotgun at two police he suspected of being burglars about 11:45 p.m. Sunday.

However, one of the officers remains in critical condition.

"The facts tend to suggest that the shot was sacked because the subject believed that they were going to be burglarized", Craig said.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig said the single shot was sacked from inside the home as the police stood on the front porch, in a media briefing published on Facebook. He has been with the department for 18 months, Craig said.

Redd says his son didn't know police had been called and was still shaken up from an attempted break-in last week.

Craig said the family is "extremely remorseful" and "just want to make sure the officer is going to be OK". The timing of the 911 calls on Sunday in not clear.

"Were on a wait-and-see mode however i will tell you we are optimistic", he said.

"Appears that this is an unfortunate situation", Craig said.

The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office is investigating. On March 15, two officers were injured on the city's west side during a shootout.
