Eight people including 7 students of Belgaum's Engineering College were today drowned in the sea off the Wairy beach in Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra during a college picnic.

Another three students were rescued by local fisherfolk. A picnic turned into a tragedy as five school students were drowned at a beach in Andhra Pradesh's Kakinada town on Thursday, police said. They were part of a group of 50 students from Maratha Mandal Engineering College in Karnataka's Belgaum district.

Shortly after reaching, the students, allegedly ignoring warnings by locals of strong currents, ventured into the sea and were soon washed away into deep waters. Three more students were drowning, but they were saved by local fishermen.

The deceased have been identified as Mujmin Aniker, Kiran Hirappa Khandekar, Arti Chavan, Avadhoot Tahsildar, Nitin Mutnalkar, Karuna Berde, Maya Kolhe, Mahesh Kuduchkar (teacher), a police official attached to Malvan police station said. Around 30 of them ventured to take a swim in the sea.

Sindhudurg police control official Ravindra Ghirkar said that one of the three students rescued is in critical condition and undergoing treatment at a hospital in the nearby Malvan region.
