Jude Law to play Dumbledore in new Harry Potter prequel

Harris' father, Richard Harris, originated the role in the Harry Potter movie franchise until his death in 2002.

Jude Law is set to play one of the most iconic characters in the wizarding world of Harry Potter, Albus Dumbledore. Author JK Rowling said that she believed that Dumbledore had fallen in love with Gellert, though it's obviously unclear if that'll be referenced in the film. Although the first film focused on Redmayne's Newt and the chaos his arrival in 1920s NY created, it ended with the reveal that the infamous dark wizard Grindelwald had been hiding among them the entire time.

Johnny Depp has already been confirmed to be starring in the second Fantastic Beasts film, in the role of dark wizard Grindelwald following a brief appearance in the first.

Warner Bros. announced the casting Tuesday. The sequel begins production this summer and already has a release date set for November 16, 2018. Acclaimed by both critics and audiences, the 2016 release became a global blockbuster, earning more than $813 million at the box office.
