State Treasurer Ron Estes won the U.S. House seat vacated by Mike Pompeo, who now serves as director of the Central Intelligence Agency. In the end, Estes prevailed with 53 percent to Thompson's 45 percent. Ted Cruz who came to Wichita to campaign for Estes the day before a special election at Yingling Aviation, Monday, April 10, 2017, in Wichita, Kan. It's fair to say they should at least be very anxious about what Tuesday's results underscore for their party's popularity right now, even among their core voters. Estes's percentage of victory exceeded that of Governor Brownback's margin in 2016 but fell far short of the majority racked up by President Trump. (Democratic nominee James Thompson regularly referred to his opponent as "Brownbacker Ron Estes.") That won't be the case in many districts the two parties fight over in 2018. "That's an incredibly impressive showing". It did not help that Brownback refused to Medicaid for the poor.
In the 4th District, Republicans outnumber Democrats about 187,000 to 96,000, with 140,000 unaffiliated voters. The district has been hurt by the downturn in the agricultural economy and the loss of hundreds of well-paying, blue-collar jobs in aircraft manufacturing plants. The 17-county congressional district includes Wichita, home to Koch Industries, the company led by conservative billionaire political donors Charles and David Koch.
The Washington Post crunched the numbers and found that if House Republicans underperform in the same way that Estes did in comparison to how Donald Trump performed in KS-04, it would mean a net 20 point swing to Democrats in House races. Thompson won 29 percent and Libertarian Chris Rockhold had zero votes in the portion of Pawnee County situated in the 4th District.
Thompson, 46, was a political newcomer backed by Our Revolution, the group that continues the work of Sen.
The Democratic candidate who ran an unexpectedly competitive race in a special congressional election in Kansas plans to run for the seat again in 2018. "Seeing everybody here, and I know where we need to go to fix what we weren't able to do in 60 days".
"We set out about 60, 75 days ago with people who told us we didn't stand a snowball's chance in hell of winning. Having 18 months to do it, I think that we'll flip the seat".
On Wednesday morning, President Donald Trump sent out a tweet touting his party's special election victory in Kansas on Tuesday. Others are in Georgia, Montana, and SC. In addition to the Kansas seat, Republicans are defending GOP-leaning seats in Georgia, Montana and SC - while Democrats are protecting a seat in a liberal California district.
Kansas has traditionally been a Republican-leaning state, and the state's 4th congressional district has historically voted red.
Still, Speaker Ryan expressed his congratulations to Estes on his victory. Anger is an excellent goad to get someone to vote so it's hardly surprising that more Democrats than usual came out to cast a ballot against the sitting president. "And we're going to make sure we change things in Washington". And the GOP has struggled to put away a trio of special election House races in districts where it won easily just last November.
"Every race is going to be a combination of local and national issues and I think on the national stage, these races are going to be indicative".
