Westbrook breaks Robertson's record for triple-doubles

Now that Russell Westbrook made history, his biggest priority is to make his team effective in the playoffs. The Nuggets trail the Portland Trail Blazers by 1 1/2 games for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference, and Sunday's home finale is one of two contests in the last three versus the Thunder.

Robertson, "The Big O", set the previous National Basketball Association record for most triple-doubles in a single season in 1961-62; a feat that was widely regarded as untouchable.

But that's not how Westbrook rolls. Especially with some players banged up, it would be intuitive for certain guys to sit in at least one game of the back-to-back. "If I wanted to get 10 assists, I could get 10 assists". Westbrook reached the scoring double (10th point) with the second of two free throws with 6:36 left until halftime.

Russell Westbrook's season has been all about doing it all. He clinched that mark during Wednesday's win over the Memphis Grizzlies, when he finished with 45 points, 10 assists and 9 rebounds.

It was Westbrook's 42nd triple-double of the season, which broke Robertson's long-standing record that had been alive since the 1961-1962 season. "No disrespect to their team, but I think James Harden has more help over there", Nuggets coach Michael Malone said before the game. "You love to see it". They are 13-25 when he does not.

Westbrook almost broke the record in his last two games.

It was yet another remarkable display of the all-around excellence that a triple-double - the achievement of double-digit totals in three of five key statistical categories - has come to represent. It was the exception to the rule for Russ, the rare occasion when padding stats became his priority. Westbrook doesn't have almost the team around him. He appreciates making history and the appreciation he's feeling from fans around the league, but he craves winning much more than individual recognition.

OAKLAND, Calif. - Kevin Durant (knee) returned from a 19-game absence Saturday, compiling 16 points, 10 rebounds and six assists in a rout of New Orleans. Right now, there is no question that Russell Westbrook is the frontrunner for the MVP award this season.

"It's something you dream about as a little kid, to be able to do that on the road - especially from that distance", Westbrook said of his game-winning shot. "My job is to go out and play at a high level every night".
