Emma Watson praises gender-neutral MTV Award after winning Best Actor

"I think I am being given this award because of who Belle is and what she represents".

Emma Watson got quite a thrill out of being the inaugural victor of MTV's best actor in a movie award.

Emma Watson ended up taking home the historic first for her role in Beauty and the Beast.

"Acting is about the ability to put yourself in someone else's shoes, and that doesn't need to be separated into two different categories", Watson said in receiving her trophy.

Especially important regarding the presentation of the award was who announced Watson as the victor: Asia Kate Dillon, who is the first gender non-binary identifying actor to have a role in a major television series (Billions, Orange Is The New Black).

"Stranger Things" star Millie Bobby Brown also won an award for best actor in a TV show ahead of "Game of Thrones" star Emilia Clarke and "Atlanta's" star Donald Glover.

The ceremony also was noteworthy for the way it nominated actors from both TV shows and movies in the same category.

Emma Watson's role in the live-action Disney movie "Beauty and the Beast" made the British actress the victor of the special award.

CBS News reported that while Watson's win and the gender-neutral categories generally drew praise, some took issue with it - including former CNN personality Piers Morgan.

The MTV awards broke ground in other ways, awarding Jharrel Jerome and Ashton Sanders the best kiss for the gay coming-of-age story "Moonlight". "We wouldn't be here without you guys, so we might not say it enough, we love you and thank you everyone who voted".

It's excellent to see that award go to someone who understands the importance of such a move.

Amy Schumer, left, and Goldie Hawn harkened to the Oscars best-picture fiasco as they presented the MTV award for movie of the year.
