Authorities say a jail inmate is holding a workers hostage an IL hospital after snatching a correctional officer's gun.

Salters, 21 and from Chicago, was an inmate at Kane County Jail and had been treated at Delnor Hospital since May 8, according to Gengler. Officials say the male inmate from Kane County Jail gained control of the officer's weapon around 12:30 p.m.

A hostage situation is underway at Delnor Hospital.

They were then escorted to a conference room, she said, where they stayed for approximately 45 minutes before they were able to leave the hospital.

Police have set up a command post in the hospital's auto park, with crisis negotiators understood to be at the scene.

Gengler says the standoff has been contained to one section of the emergency room. "Those that needed medical care were transferred to other hospitals", hospital spokeswoman Kimberly Waterman said, adding that the hospital was on lockdown. She said she heard a nurse yell, "Code silver", which she knew, because she works at a hospital, meant "active shooter".

Gengler says the emergency room has been cleared of patients and no one is being allowed in.

The Illinois State Police is conducting the investigation, which remains ongoing.
