On Monday, he met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem, and departed for Rome on Tuesday afternoon.
With the drama over Melania swatting off Donald Trump's hand in Riyadh still going viral on the social media, the first lady has done it yet again. The White House also referred to Abbas as president of "Palestine" in a schedule, despite the fact that the USA does not recognize a Palestinian state.
"Only under our sovereignty Jerusalem had become an island of tolerance", Netanyahu said.
Their talks came with hundreds of Palestinians in Israeli jails on hunger strike since April 17, which Abbas referred to in his remarks after meeting Trump. His two days in Israel passed without any public statements on the defining, real-world elements of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict: no mention of "settlements", or "final status", much less "statehood" or "refugees". The measures included extending the operating hours of the Allenby Bridge border crossing between the West Bank and Jordan, expanding a West Bank industrial zone and allowing Palestinian construction in areas of the West Bank under full Israeli control.
"I am truly hopeful that America can help Israel and the Palestinians forge peace and bring new hope to the region and its people", Trump said during a joint appearance with Abbas.
"We would like to reiterate our commitment to cooperate with you to make peace and achieve an historic peace agreement between us and the Israelis", he added, echoing similar pledges from Netanyahu.
Hope that Trump will announce the relocation of the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem was replaced with a less-ambitious goal of having the president make a reference recognizing Israel's right to the city. "Head spinning: Never has a US president expressed so much confidence in a conflict-ending peace agreement with so little prospect of success", tweeted Aaron David Miller who was a USA negotiator on the Middle East in both Republican and Democratic administrations.
Trump initially sparked deep concern among Palestinians when he backed away from the long USA commitment to a two-state solution to the conflict.
Trump, on a tour that has already taken him to Saudi Arabia, Israel and the Palestinian territories, touched down in the Italian capital aboard Air Force One just before 1630 GMT, an AFP staffer travelling with the presidential team said.
"The two leaders discussed ways to advance negotiations and considered how Arab states might support those negotiations".
The most high-profile moment of Trump's stay in Jerusalem was his visit to the Western Wall, one of the holiest sites in Judaism.
This "fixation" on Iran and its threats to regional peace and stability can not be a substitute for real efforts to solve the ongoing regional conflicts, beginning with the Palestinian problem and ending with the six-year-old bloody civil war in Syria. They're losers, and we'll have more of them. The Palestinians, if an independent Palestinian state is created, want to claim east Jerusalem as their capital.
