The appointment of Robert Lighthizer as the next USA trade representative could see the Trump administration's long-awaited plans to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) get underway as early as mid-August, reports suggest.
With your rich experience in global trade issues and negotiating trade agreements, we are pleased you are at the helm of the office that facilitates USA trade.
Lighthizer, 69, will be the principal US negotiator in talks expected to start later this year to revamp the 23-year-old North American Free Trade Agreement with Canada and Mexico. But will President Trump change trade deals to make North American citizens and workers better off-or just business?
Mr. Lighthizer declined to answer questions after the closed-door briefing, but Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said more consultations are needed before issuing the notification letter.
"The meetings will give members the opportunity to meet directly with Ambassador Lighthizer and discuss how Congress can work with the administration to advance a strong pro-growth trade agenda, including ideas to modernize NAFTA", said Julia Lawless, communications director of the Senate Finance Committee.
President Donald Trump has broken with most Republicans in his criticism of free trade agreements.
Formally notifying Congress of renegotiation intentions would commence a 90-day period for discussions. "As the Trump Administration's trade policy strategy develops, we want to build upon the USA government's past successes in pushing back against the EU's global GI agenda", said Tom Vilsack, president and CEO of USDEC.
