Officials piece together events before nursing home shooting

Law enforcement officials gather outside the scene of a shooting outside the Pine Kirk nursing home in Kirkersville Ohio on Friday

Police Chief, 2 Others Killed in Ohio Nursing Home Shooting

Hartless was later found dead inside the nursing home.

DeWine said the suspect first took two people hostage behind the nursing home, apparently to keep them from revealing his presence. The turnout was so great the house of worship reached standing room only and chairs were set up outside.

Court records show the man authorities say gunned down an OH village police chief and two nursing home employees had a history of violence, including against the nurse who was among the slain. The nursing home was the site of a fatal shooting on Friday, after Thomas Hartless, 43, shot Kirkersville police chief Steven DiSario, nurse Marlina Medrano and nurse's aide Cindy Krantz. Investigators said Medrano and Hartless had a relationship.

The 36-year-old Disario was shot near the Pine Kirk Care Center Friday morning. "I remember he had given candy to the kids and it was just so sweet because he was new you know so, this is just our gratitude to say thank you for protecting all of us".

The coroner says 46-year-old nurse Marlina Medrano was killed in the center's nursing station and died of multiple gunshots from both a handgun and shotgun.

Disario headed the Kirkersville Police Department for only about three weeks, Licking County Sheriff Randy Thorp said.

A woman who lives across the street said she and her 6-year-old son heard it happen.

"He was shot after he entered the nursing home". He was the father of six, with a seventh child on the way. They were removed so the scene so they could be processed, he said.

The elementary school - about a quarter of a mile away - was on lockdown as a precaution while the police investigated.

Medical helicopters were called to land at the National Trail Raceway. He was taken to a local hospital, where he died soon after.

In reaction to the tragic event, U.S. Sen. Chief Disario gave the ultimate sacrifice for his bravery and all of us are grateful to him and his family for their service to the community. The hostages escaped unharmed, as did all 23 residents of the nursing home.

Hartless isn't new to law enforcement, according to Knox County Prosecutor Chip McConville.

Thorp says it was in that area that Kirkersville Police Chief Steven Eric Disario was killed while responding to reports of a man with a gun. As we begin police week, we remember the fearless service of all police officers, who put their lives on the line every day to protect us. Join me in praying for his family, friends and colleagues, and for the others injured in this tragedy.
