"Solar Roof uses two types of tiles-solar and non-solar", Tesla said in a statement.
Installations are set to begin in the USA this summer and from 2018 elsewhere. US orders will be delivered and installed later this year, though pricing remains unknown. The glass tiles were unveiled by Tesla last fall just before the company merged with solar panel maker SolarCity Corp. According to Consumer Report, a slate tile roof for a home the same size costs about $45,000. The solar tiles contain photovoltaic cells that are invisible from the street. Musk's logic is that by building solar generation units that resemble a traditional roof, Tesla could overcome one stubborn hurdle in solar adoption - one of perceived poor aesthetics.
"It's looking quite promising that a solar roof will actually cost less than a normal roof before you even take the value of electricity into account", Musk said at the event.
Pricing will vary depending on where you live (due to subsidies on offer) and the design of your house. You can also make adjustments to your estimate, like specifying the exact roof square footage or the amount of your current monthly electric bill.
The average cost of installing Solar Roof will be $21,85 per square foot (about $220 per square meter), while tile with a solar battery costs $42, and the remaining tiles will cost $11.
Tesla returns and once again they are back to change the game. The company believes that in order to recoup the roof for 30 years, will be enough 35% of the tiles. On its website, Tesla is taking $1,000 deposits toward work that includes removing a house's existing roof, installing the solar tiles and equipping the home with a battery to store power.
A federal tax credit drops that amount by almost $14,000, but Tesla's Powerwall battery adds a $7,000 expense. The roof would be eligible for a $15,500 federal tax credit and would generate an estimated $62,100 in electricity over 30 years. To achieve those numbers, Tesla will have to come up with the technology that can sustain for a long time. This is meant to ensure that homes have a uniform look without forcing homeowners to only purchase solar-capable roof tiles.
"It will be very hard and it will take a long time, and there will be some stumbles along the way".
Tesla will manufacture the tiles at its solar factory in Buffalo, New York. But eventually all production will move to a joint Tesla and Panasonic Corp. factory in Buffalo, New York.
