Montreal was in danger of losing Beaulieu in the expansion draft, while Buffalo has room to protect him. Since then, he has played 225 games in the National Hockey League, scoring seven goals and 53 assists.
Beaulieu was a first round pick (17th overall) in the 2011 NHL Draft.
Before that Nate split time between Montreal and Hamilton (the Habs old AHL affiliate) from 2012-13 to 2014-15.
On the score sheet, the blue liner had a breakout season; he even opened up the season on the top pairing with Shea Weber. In 225 career National Hockey League regular-season games, Beaulieu has totaled 60 points (7 goals, 53 assists) and a plus-19 rating, adding four points in 17 career playoff games.
"Obviously, it's disappointing", Beaulieu said of being a healthy scratch against NY, per the Montreal Gazette.
He added one assist in five playoff games.
The deal was struck just before National Hockey League teams were required to submit their protected lists for the Vegas Golden Knights expansion draft.
We won't know until next week, but the Sabres did themselves some good by landing a d-man like Beaulieu.
