Former NBA basketball player Dennis Rodman gestures to photographers as he prepares to go through immigration at Beijing Capital International Airport in Beijing, Tuesday, June 13, 2017.

The former Chicago Bulls player, speaking as he prepared to board a flight in Beijing, said he's "pretty sure" President Trump is happy he's "trying to accomplish something that we both need".

The flamboyant Rodman, who has called Kim "an awesome kid", said in an interview with CNN in 2014, his travels to North Korea would help "open the door" to the isolated nation.

Rodman, who arrived in Pyongyang Tuesday, is one of the most peculiar links that the US has with the reclusive North Korean regime. "We are so grateful he can finally be with people who love him". Warmbier initially was detained in January 2016, accused of trying to steal a propaganda banner at his Pyongyang hotel.

Speaking to reporters in Tokyo, Under Secretary of State Thomas Shannon said that the U.S. was aware of Rodman's visit, and that he is traveling as a private citizen.

In 2014, Rodman arranged a basketball game with other former NBA players and North Koreans and regaled leader Kim with a rendition of "Happy Birthday".

Rodman's North Korea visits over the years have fuelled speculation he could facilitate a diplomatic breakthrough between Pyongyang and Washington.

"He has a unique awesome relationship between both President Trump and Marshall Kim Jong Un, he is the only man to have a relationship with both people", Volo says. The former N.B.A. star has been one of the United States' most unlikely links to North Korea.

As NPR's Elise Hu reports from Seoul, the U.S. State Department has issued several warnings advising Americans not to travel to North Korea.

The bombastic player - who once wore a wedding dress to promote one of his books - appeared as a contestant on Mr Trump's pre-presidency reality television show Celebrity Apprentice. When asked if he planned to raise their detention with North Korean officials, Rodman said: "Well that's not my objective right now".

"We have no comment on Mr Warmbier's condition, out of respect for him and his family", Tillerson told U.S. senators at the start of a hearing into his budget.

The student's parents, Fred and Cindy Warmbier, said they were only informed of his condition last week.

Otto Warmbier (WORM'-bir), who had been serving a 15-year prison term, was freed and evacuated from North Korea on Tuesday, as Rodman arrived in the reclusive country.

Warmbier's exact condition was not known, but his parents said they were told that he had gotten botulism soon after his trial and had been given a sleeping pill, from which he never woke up.

"Rodman is in the very rare position to be able to claim longtime friendships with both the Supreme Leader of North Korea, as well as with the current president of the United States".

Nearly oxymoronically, Rodman claims to be a friend of both North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un and American President Donald Trump.

He probably hopes things will go more smoothly on his latest visit to North Korea, which started Tuesday. Yun then met last week with the North Korean ambassador at the U.N.in NY, where Yun learned about Warmbier's condition.

Pyongyang has already 16 missiles this year.

"Otto has left North Korea".
