Mexico Make Light Work Of Honduras Before CONCACAF's Great Showdown

The U.S. has played just once since in Mexico, a 0-0 tie at Azteca in a 2014 World Cup qualifier, so Sunday's critical 2018 qualifier provides an opportunity to claim points in North America's most fearsome fortress for the third successive game.

Mexico dominated every facet of the game as they had 73% of the possession, 17 shots, and four shots on goal, compared to Honduras's five shots and zero on goal.

Goalkeeper Tim Howard of the US national soccer team warms up during a pre-match training session at Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, Saturday, June 10, 2017.

They don't need points at Mexico on Sunday night, but man, would a result at the Azteca be nice. "Once we got the first one, it kind of opened up".

Just in case that didn't put enough of a target on his back heading into Sunday's match, the 18-year-old essentially guaranteed a win at Mexico in an interview with FS1 immediately after the match.

"It's going to take a lot, but I think with the guys we have and the confidence we have, there's no reason why we can't do it", he said.

Speaking at Saturday's news conference, Arena said dryly: "I think I would like our players to believe that that they can win".

"We were briefly teammates, so I can say I was happy to see my former teammate return to take over the National Team", Roy said of Arena's re-appointment last November.

"We feel confident we can do that again". In six games Mexico team won five victories and a draw once.

It is Mexico's fourth consecutive victory and the match cements its top spot on 13 points.

Honduras featured four MLS players making appearances against Mexico, three of which play for the Dynamo. They stuck with this for pretty much all 90 minutes, and needless to say, it didn't work too well.

With Mexico missing four of their regulars (Rafa Marquez, Andres Guardado, Miguel Layun and Salcedo) the task of breaking down the USA defense will fall squarely on Chicharito Hernandez and Raul Jimenez.

How will Pulisic react to the pressure of the Azteca?

As if we could go with anyone else. Mexico and the U.S. agreed to move up the date of this qualifier in order to allow El Tri more preparation time for the Federation Internationale de Football Association event, where they will also face New Zealand (June 21) and Russia (June 24) in Group A play. In 12 games at the Azteca, friendly or competitive, the USMNT is 1-9-2, though the last two games were a win and draw respectively.

Returning to Mexico City seven years later, Roy was part of the patchwork USA side that had gained only one point from its home-and-away set of qualifiers against Canada weeks earlier, though the striker was in form, having tallied in both matches. Mexico's 21-year-old attacker Hirving "Chucky" Lozano is a bona fide star, and is reportedly on his way from Pachuca to Manchester City.
