Naidu, former BJP president, was chosen at the party's parliamentary board meeting here attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior party leaders. He will now take on the opposition candidate, Gopalkrishna Gandhi, whose name was announced by a clutch of 18 parties on July 13.
Naidu, 68, had kept a low profile and been tight-lipped about the chances of him being the V-P nominee for the BJP.
After the surprise nomination of Ram Nath Kovind for the Presidential Elections, the ruling National Democratic Alliance is planning similar feat for the post of Vice President. "That's why I became a little emotional", he told reporters after filing his nomination papers for the Vice Presidential poll. "I am happy being Usha's pati (husband of Usha)". "I am not going to say anything against anyone", he said, adding that he has no intention to campaign for the election.
But questions are being raised as to why Naidu has been picked for the post of Vice-President? He rose to become one of the most popular leaders of the BJP in Andhra Pradesh.
Legislators from both the Houses of Parliament, including the nominated members will be eligible to vote in the election. During the last Budget session, the Rajya Sabha saw much uproar in the wake of Finance Bill 2017, which the Upper House panned and made several revisions to, all of course rejected. In a lighter vein, Modi said the treasury benches in the Rajya Sabha, of which Naidu will be chairman if elected, "will not let his blood pressure go up" and offer him their fullest cooperation.
Thus Naidu is considered to be the best versed with parliamentary proceedings. The Lok Sabha now has 543 members and the Rajya Sabha 243.
Besides, Janata Dal United's Sharad Yadav, Communist Party of India-Marxist leader Sitaram Yechury, Nationalist Congress Party's Tariq Anwar and Praful Patel, Communist Party of India's D. Raja, DMK's Kanimozhi, Trinamool Congress leader Derek O'Brien, Samajwadi Party's Satish Chandra Mishra, and National Conference's Farooq Abdullah were among those present wit Gopal Gandhi.
Apparently, the main objective that can be assessed behind naming Naidu is BJP's political ambition of strengthening its roots as well as boosting the party's electoral strategies in the southern Indian states where the BJP has not been in power since a long time. In the party too, he has held important positions.
The front runners for the candidacy include Union minister M Venkaiah Naidu and Tamil Nadu governor C Vidyasagar Rao. Since Centre had not kept its promise of Special Category Status to AP and Special Railway Zone to Visakhapatnam yet, and it is highly unlikely that it would keep in the remaining period, many Telugu people, leaders have mixed reaction over Venkaiah's elevation to the Vice President.
