Rafael Nadal is coming off a quarterfinal trip in the Cincinnati Masters and has had mixed results since winning the French Open. "We never played here in NY, so I think that would be fun for everybody involved", added Federer.
Wimbledon proved to be a punishing affair for a huge selection of world-class talent, and the fallout from London has seen the U.S Open become a battle of the fittest. "Now to be back this year, fast forward a year later, fighting for No. 1, it's pretty fantastic".
A host of star names are missing from both the men's events, including Novak Djokovic, defending champion Stan Wawrinka, Milos Raonic and former finalist Kei Nishikori. Sharapova has never lost to Halep in six previous meetings, but is playing just her second tournament since retiring in second round of the Internazionali BNL d'Italia, pulling out of the Bank of the West Classic after one match citing a left forearm injury. Nadal has lost in the first round of a grand slam once since 2014.
With the draw revealed Friday at the South Street Seaport, the third-seeded Federer was placed on the same side of the draw as the No. 1 Nadal, meaning they would meet in the semifinals.
"I played absolute shit", was Zverev's brutal summary.
However, it will be a big ask for him to win it at 20-years-old.
"I'd be happy to play him here".
Murray's US Open title defence ended in a whimper as Wawrinka once again outplayed him at Flushing Meadows. The current No.1, Pliskova is another name on many people lips after losing in the final a year ago, although her form has been somewhat inconsistent on the North American hard courts in the run up to the United States open. The unorthodox American has had a decent year so far, reaching a career high ranking of 60 earlier in the year and while Federer will be the heavy favourite, the fact that Tiafoe is playing in front of his home fans means this promises to be a very entertaining match.
Nadal, 31, heads to NY on the back of a quarter-final loss to Nick Kyrgios in Cincinnati and a Montreal last-16 defeat to Canadian teenager Denis Shapovalov. "So the first week was really just, you know, trying to feel better, get better, get back on the court at some stage".
He couldn't have envisioned winning the Australian Open, winning Wimbledon, winning top tier events back-to-back at Indian Wells and Miami, and a total of five tournaments in all. Federer can swing freely, knowing that this is a tournament he's already won five times and he has already had a successful season winning the two Grand Slam titles at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, so he really can swing with reckless abandon.
Murray, Nadal, and Zverev had all previously been confirmed for the tournament, and the three headline an extremely strong field which also features the likes of 2016 runner-up Grigor Dimitrov, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, and John Isner.
Nadal, who plays Dusan Lajovic of Serbia in the first round, said: "A lot of points and games to play, so now is not the moment to think about that".
The US Open 2017 seeds has been announced as well.
A hip injury contributed to a quarter-final exit at Wimbledon and he has been sidelined since, although he made the trip to NY and expects to play.
