NU Professor, Oxford Staffer Charged With 1st Degree Murder

"What they discovered in that apartment can only be described as savage and grisly and shocked what is otherwise a very safe area", Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said at a press conference Sunday.

The hairstylist, who police say was in a personal relationship with Lathem, was found with more than 40 stab wounds on July 27.

Former Northwestern University professor Wyndham Lathem and Andrew Warren, both charged in the murder of a 26-year-old man in a River North high rise, returned to Chicago Friday night following their capture in California.

An Illinois state prosecutor shared new details about the July slaying, describing to the court how Trenton James Cornell-Duranleau, the 26-year-old boyfriend of since-fired professor Wyndham Lathem, was stabbed some 70 times and with such brutality that he was almost decapitated.

Deenihan said the two were scheduled to appear in bond court Sunday afternoon, where the State's attorney would explain Warren's connection to the murder through a bond proffer.

Authorities have offered little information about what may have led to the attack.

Chicago police escorted fired Northwestern University professor Wyndham Lathem, 43, and Oxford University financial officer Andrew Warren, 56, from Northern California, where they surrendered peacefully on August 4 after an eight-day, nationwide manhunt.

Andrew Warren on August 19. He said the investigation found that Warren and Lathem had met through the internet, and that Lathem had picked Warren up from O'Hare International Airport several days before the murder. They stood with their hands behind their backs as the judge spoke. Wine said Lathem intends to plead not guilty to the charges.

The men drove to Lake Geneva and donated $1,000 in Cornell-Duranleau's name to the Lake Geneva Public Library, where Deenihan said Lathem was the one who made the anonymous call to the doorman alerting him of the crime.

She said the victim's last words were addressed to Lathem: "Wyndham, what are you doing?" The video raised concern among investigators that Lathem might kill himself. She said Lathem was supposed to stab Warren to death as Warren was fatally shooting him.
