Paul Ryan: Leaders must push beyond 'passions of the moment'

"I don't think anyone is interested in having a shutdown".

President Donald Trump's threats to shut down the government in October over border wall funding triggered concerns on Capitol Hill and could complicate Congress's job of raising the debt ceiling.

Ryan was in Hillsboro to promote his plan for tax reform, but addressed the reaction of Krzanich and many other tech and manufacturing leaders following Trump's comments on violent protests in Charlottesville, Virg. earlier this month.

Trump is trying to put pressure on GOP senators to approve border wall funding already ok'd by the House.

"The fact is though, given the time of year it is and the rest of the appropriations we have to do, we're going to need more time to complete our appropriations process particularly in the Senate - so that's something that I think we all recognize and understand", Ryan said.

McConnell insisted he and Trump are unified on policy goals, such as funding the government and ending Obamacare, but he had few warm words about their relationship.

"An immigration system... that is based on what the economy needs, based on skills, based on contributions to the economy, is the kind of system that, I believe an emerging consensus is occurring that we hope to achieve", he said. "This isn't one of these issues where you have a difference in priorities between the House and Senate and White House; we're totally on the same page on this".

Wall Street seemed rattled by Trump's rhetoric on Wednesday, as stocks took a dive.

Congress has roughly 12 working days when it returns from recess after Labor Day to produce a spending bill or vote on a stopgap measure to keep the government operating. The S&P 500 index fell.35% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell.4%. "Now the obstructionist Democrats would like us not to do it".

"With a Republican House, Senate and Administration, Republicans have absolutely no excuses for threatening America's families with a destructive and pointless government shutdown", the California Democrat said in a statement.
