Newcastle winger Christian Atsu said after the match that Shelvey has apologised to his team-mates for his red card.

Newcastle club legend Alan Shearer labelled Shelvey as "pathetic" whilst Sky commentator Alan Smith believed it was one of the most stupid dismissals he has ever seen.

Kyle Walker-Peters replaces the departing Kyle Walker at right-back for Spurs, while Victor Wanyama is only on the bench.

Mauricio Pochettino praised Alli's maturity after the midfielder was on the receiving end of some tough tackling from Newcastle, including a lunge from Matt Ritchie that earned him a yellow card, and was booed by Newcastle fans when he was substituted with 10 minutes remaining. Subs: Vorm, Wimmer, Carter-Vickers, Son, Wanyama, Winks, Janssen.

He adds that Shelvey is upset with himself for letting the team down, but the team is behind him. Subs: Darlow, Lascelles, Mbemba, Murphy, Aarons, Merino, Mitrovic.

Pochettino, however, admitted his side had found it hard to break Rafael Benitez's men up until that point: "We knew how they play, so narrow and deep".

"I'm sure he'll be disappointed.it was important we stayed professional".

"I felt we dominated the game", Pochettino told a postmatch news conference. He thinks he let the team down.

On their last visit to St James' Park they were humiliated by an already relegated Newcastle side on the final day of the 2015/16 campaign and will be keen to exact a measure of revenge on the Toon Army this afternoon.
