Remembering Indian hockey legend Dhyan Chand

The Arunachal Physical Education and Sports Union (APESU) celebrated National Sports Day with the theme "Sports is the best weapon in the battle for peace on Earth" at Government Higher Secondary School, Chimpu. The National Sports Day celebrations are a commemoration of his achievements.

During the programme, a total of 100 sportspersons from 7 sports disciplines who have excelled in both the national and regional competitions were felicitated with cash awards.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday paid tribute to hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand on his birth anniversary and launched the National Sports Talent Search portal. It was in the Army where Dhyan Chand took up hockey. A German newspaper carried a banner headline: 'The Olympic complex now has a magic show too.' The next day, there were posters all over Berlin: Visit the hockey stadium to watch the Indian magician Dhyan Chand in action.

Every year, on his birthday, Indian President presents the sports-related awards including the Arjuna Award, Dronacharya Award and Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna to honour sports persons who have made a recognisable contribution to Indian sports.

"Sports should become a part of our lives".

"The #NationalSportsTalentSearchPortal gives essential direction and support to youngsters to pursue their sporting aspirations and shine", tweeted PM Modi. This portal will provide guidance and assistances to all the youth of India seeing to grow in the field of sports. "Sports, in a way, is a recipe that brings people together". But more than a big budget, it was also the myth surrounding sports films in India where up until Lagaan (2002), the genre was usually considered a no-go in terms of box office success that must have dented the chances of an adaptation. He also added that the sports search portal was launched to harness the huge sports talent in India.
