White House renovations unfold while Trump stays at golf resort

With Trump on Vacation, a Sprucing Up for the West Wing

Trump may return to Washington for one-day trip on Monday: report

While President Donald Trump vacations in New Jersey, construction crews are busy doing major renovations at the White House.

The tour included a stop in the Oval Office, its wall covered in plastic and the traditional carpet removed, exposing tricolor parquet floors.

The Roosevelt Room in the West Wing of the White House underwent renovations. New carpet, curtains and paint are part of the work that is going on in just a part of the White House.

Other recurring problems include leaks in the ceiling and a chronic house fly infestation, according to CNN.

Despite criticism for taking a vacation, White House staff insist that this renovation was "dire".

"I love the White House, one of the most lovely buildings (homes) I have ever seen".

According to one account, Trump told staffers and members of his New Jersey golf resort that his new home is "a real dump" - a remark he later denied making.

Politico, which first reported the story, said Trump's updated schedule showed him returning to NY on Monday, before heading to New Jersey on Wednesday to finish out the final days of his working vacation. The White House was built in the 1790s, burned in 1814 and reconstructed in 1817. "They don't happen every year, but they do happen on a periodic basis because of the needs of an old building, and particularly in the West Wing, a very dense office space".
