That is a slight increase from July where it was at 3.7%. Alaska again held the worst-state title, with a jobless rate of 7.2 percent.

The unemployment rate fell to 3.3 percent in Tennessee, the lowest on records in that state dating back to 1976.

The state's preliminary jobs estimate for July was also revised up from 800 to 3,400 jobs added.

Indiana's labor force increased by 4,615 from the previous month due to an 8,007 decrease in employment and a 12,622 increase in unemployment. "This growth was concentrated in the private sector, with three industries adding more than 1,000 jobs each", Doerksen said.

Officials say Kansas has lost 9,000 seasonally adjusted nonfarm jobs, including 6,300 private-sector jobs.

An additional 1,802 new entrants joined the labor force in August, and employment increased by 2,979 for a total of 796,430, absorbing 1,177 unemployed workers.

Year over year, nonfarm employment rose by 5,200 jobs (government reported the largest increase of 2,200 jobs), while farms cut 2,800 jobs. Trade, transportation and utilities added the most jobs in August at 1,400, while jobs in other services grew the fastest at 2.9 percent.

"From day one, a top priority of our administration has been growing our private sector and creating more jobs and we have made incredible progress", Gov. Larry Hogan said in a statement. Jobs in leisure and hospitality rose 4,600, largely in food services (+3,000).
