Jeff Bezos is rich. Amazon stock saw a spike in after-hours trading on Thursday after the company reported strong third-quarter earnings.
Jeff Bezos is on track to become the world's richest person. It happened in the wake of a better than expected third quarter earnings report from Amazon, and Bezos is now the world's richest individual, having edged out the former (and, if past trends continue to repeat themselves, future) holder of that title, Microsoft founder Bill Gates.
His wealth briefly eclipsed that of Mr Gates, the Microsoft co-founder, on an intra-day basis on July 27, but Amazon shares ended that day lower, leaving Mr Bezos at No. 2.
Gates first hit the big time in 1995 when he was 39 and his $12.9 billion fortune put him on top of the billionaire ratings.
After a busy morning on the stock market, Bezos is once again the richest man in the world. He made more than $10 billion from the one-day stock surge and is now worth well over $90 billion. Gates owned 103 million shares as of September, according to FactSet. Gates, who has sold most of his Microsoft stake, added US$600 million.
