A police official said a soldier was identified as Sham Sunder was allegedly killed in an encounter in Aglar village of Pulwama district in south Kashmir. The M4 rifle is hard to carry, maintain and hide. "It also needs a different class of ammunition whereas AK47 which we are using as the main weapon is a very rugged and effective weapon in the ranges we operate in", he said.

"How it (M4 carbine) came into the hands of this group, the matter will have to be taken up through different channels with concerned embassies".

"It is for the first time that M4 carbine has been recovered in Kashmir".

Giving specification about the weapon, he said M4 is the advance version of old M16 rifle which the USA army used during Vietnam War.

"Top commanders have been killed but militancy is still there", they said.

A senior police officer not willing to be quoted said, "On intelligence inputs a joint operation including Jammu and Kashmir Police and Indian Army was launched in Pulwama's Samboora village".

"The slain militants included two Pakistani nationals and a local". The bodies of all the three terrorists were recovered along with two AK-47 rifles and a pistol, he said.
