Following today's announcement that EA purchased Titanfall developer Respawn in a deal that could be worth up to $455 million, the second reaction was, "What's in it for each party?"

There already was a deep collaboration between the two companies, EA will pay 151 Million USD for the takeover, with additional bonuses and funds once certain targets are reached. Respawn has a good pedigree too, it was founded by Call Of Duty veterans Jason West and Vince Zampella.

With Titanfall and Star Wars, EA has been a great development partner that supports us and doesn't interfere with our process for making games or studio culture.
Respawn and EA have had a close relationship for years now, and EA isn't shy about opening up its wallet to acquire new studios when it smells success.
In the years following, a good chunk of Infinity Ward's staff made the jump to Respawn to work on the studio's flagship Titanfall franchise.
The fact that EA acquired Respawn isn't concerning in and of itself; what is concerning is the timing of the acquisition. Up-to last week though, Respawn was independent reports Kokatu. EA exercised its contractual right to match the offer, Kotaku says, and it ultimately outbid Nexon. The developer has already worked with EA on numerous occasions and, together with the new Titanfall game, is also now working on an unnamed third-person action adventure game set in the Star Wars universe. EA recently shuttered Dead Space developer Visceral Games (formerly known as EA Redwood Shores) and is now in the process of reworking the game from being an action-adventure single-player title to something akin to DICE's Battlefront series, with a potential multiplayer component and microtransactions to profit from.
