According to PTI, the police said that over 17 others are feared dead, but their bodies are yet to be recovered.
The incident occurred while the ferry was going from Bhavani Island to the Pavithra Sangamam, on the Krishna River in Ibrahimpatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
The District Collector said a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder was booked against the company operating the boat. They all belonged to Prakasam and Nellore districts.
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has expressed shock over the accident and directed Director General Police Sambasiva Rao to rush to the scene and supervise rescue operations. "If they had taken the insurance under Chandranna Bima Scheme, an additional amount of Rs 2 lakh would be paid to each family", he said.
According to the Newspaper, The boat with around 38 persons was heading to the Pavitra Sangamam Ferry ghat near Ibrahimpatnam.Fifteen persons were rescued by local fishermen.
The boat overturned as it was nearing the ferry point at around 5:45 pm.
The boat's carrying capacity is 24 people.
The personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are leading the search and rescue operation. Local media reports suggested the boat was overloaded with passengers and the buoyancy of water changed leading to the disaster.
Survivors said they boarded the private boat as the boats of the Tourism Department were not available.
