Mrs. Sanders said that the Trump campaign has always fully cooperated with the investigation, including turning over all of Mr. Papadopoulos's emails. "That doesn't have anything to do with the campaign or campaign's activities", she said.
Sanders's assertion is at odds with the indictment issued by the Special Counsel investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election, which states Papadopoulos was encouraged to meet with Russian officials by campaign officials.
"The real collusion scandal, as we've said several times before, has everything to do with the Clinton campaign, Fusion GPS and Russian Federation".
"There is no evidence Mr. Manafort or the Trump campaign colluded with the Russian government", said Manafort's attorney, Kevin Downing.
Trump campaign volunteer George Papadopoulos plead guilty in October for lying to federal agents about his contact with Russian citizens and officials during the presidential election. And he was part of a list that was read out in the Washington Post.
"What Papadopoulos did was lie and that's on him, not the campaign", said Mrs. Sanders.
"It has to do with his failure to tell the truth".
"What the Clinton campaign did, what the DNC did was actually exchange money, they took a meeting", Sanders said.
"There are no activities or official capacity in which the Trump campaign was engaged in any of these activities".
Tuesday's White House press briefing focused mainly on questions about Robert Mueller's ongoing investigation, which White House Chief of Staff John Kelly called "very distracting" to the president, according to The Hill.
As she spoke, CNN cited its report that Trump was "seething" behind the scenes after reports of the indictments on Monday, and noted that Trump has frequently tweeted about the probe.
"Which I think that shows, one, his level of importance in the campaign and two, what little role he had within coordinating anything officially for the campaign", she said, repeating her attempts to minimize Papadopoulos' role in the President's campaign, which she said was "extremely limited".
