The Karni Sena, which demolished the sets of the movie in Jaipur and thrashed Bhansali earlier this year, had warned the director of dire consequences for misrepresenting Rajput queen Padmavati in the film.
The Panel will be chaired by Anurag Thakur and will also be hearing from CBFC chief Prasoon Joshi and officials from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
"They are violating the principle of rule of law", the court said further observing, "We say nothing more, nothing less for the time being".
Top Union ministers too have said Bhansali should consult with opponents of the film and historians to arrive at a version that is acceptable to them all.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday stood up once again as the voice of sanity amid a cacophony of illogical protests against the release of the Hindi film, Padmavati. The makers of the movie have submitted the three application which includes the latest 3D one, to the Censor Board. "He also has to tell us why the film was not shown to the people who actually had objections to it". A formal decision on the second application has been cleared yet by the board yet. The makers have deferred the release till they receive a certificate from the CBFC. Our clock has stopped now, we are just waiting and waiting. In view of this, our interference will tantamount to pre-judging the matter.
Senior advocate Harish Salve, appearing for the producer, said there were no plans for a release overseas without CBFC clearance.
"Needless to say that the pleadings are premature", the bench had said that CBFC was a statutory body and the court could not injunct it from doing its duty of certifying the film. The film, starring Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor, has been in the midst of a controversy since January, with Rajput groups and others accusing Bhansali of distorting history. BJP government in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat have demanded that the movie should be banned or have asked the makers to remove the objectionable content from the movie before its release.
