Information from secondary sources supplemented any missing data to give hospitals as much credit as possible toward their Safety Grade.
The safety grades are released twice a year and assign letter grades from "A" to "F" to hospitals across the country.
Spectrum Health Blodgett, Butterworth, Ludington, United, and Zeeland Community all received A's.
More than 800 hospitals earned an A grade, with the highest percentages found in Virginia, Rhode Island, Maine, Hawaii and Idaho. In the category of safety problems for the fall 2017 report, the hospital scored among the best hospitals in the country in all four areas surveyed.
According to the EAM and Leapfrog, Michigan is showing a trend in declining A grades and increasing B grades. St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago was awarded the organization's highest grade, an "A" in patient safety.
Leapfrog says you can use the ratings to find hospitals that prioritize patient safety, meaning hospitals got better grades if they had track records for preventing hospital-acquired infections, hand washing, stopping bed sores, training doctors, communicating about prescriptions and more. "An "A" Safety Grade recognizes hospitals for this accomplishment", said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. It is calculated by top patient safety experts, peer-reviewed and fully transparent. "At the very least, everyone should get an A on patient safety". For the first time, Maryland was included in the list after an exemption was lifted that excluded the state from reporting some safety metrics at the federal level. About a third of hospitals overall earned an "A" from Leapfrog: 832 of the 2,632 hospitals rated this fall.
St. Catherine Hospital was one of only 832 hospitals out of 2,639 hospitals in the USA, and only one of 18 in IN, to receive an "A" for its commitment to meeting the highest patient safety standards in the country.
"Maryland hospitals rank 37th on Outcomes and 50th on Process/Structures, indicating there is significant improvement needed in all areas of patient safety analyzed in the safety grade", Leapfrog told HealthExec.
