Arkansas is one of 23 states where influenza activity is rated as widespread by the Centers for Disease Control.
Dallas County Health and Human Services is reporting the fourth and fifth flu-related deaths in Dallas County for the 2017-18 season.
"Flu season typically peaks in January and February, so there is still time to protect yourself and your family from the flu", said Dr. Anissa Davis, Long Beach city health officer, in a statement. The fifth patient was an 81-year-old resident of Irving.
This week, WebMD ranked Kansas City No. 5 on its cold and flu map, indicating that the risk of getting a cold or flu in both Kansas and Missouri is severe. "The course of flu is unpredictable in both adults and children and it is hard to identify the stage of transmission with certainty", said Bakht Roshan, MD, Infectious Disease Specialist. That's up from 84 cases reported during the previous week.
A child has died from the flu in our state. People with no medical insurance can get a flu shot at a County public health center. The state is seeing more flu activity than past year at this time, with 49 people needing hospital care.
-Take everyday preventive actions like covering coughs and sneezes, avoid touching your eyes or mouth, staying away from sick people and washing your hands often to help stop the spread of respiratory viruses including flu. It also maintains that an annual flu vaccine is the the first and most important step in protecting against flu viruses.
And if you're not already home fighting off the bug, it's still a good idea to get a flu shot if you haven't.
Since October, nearly 3,500 vaccines have been given at 25 different flu vaccination clinics throughout the city, including a drive-through vaccination clinic.
